CommoditEASE is a free content encyclopedia of consumer products. CommoditEASE is written collaboratively by internet users for no pay. We hope that this site will allow consumers to have access to the world’s collective knowledge about their favorite products.
We believe that knowing how a product affects our health and the environment, or about the business practices and social outreach programs supported by product manufacturers, will help us as consumers measure our indirect impact.
Our goals are to
- Create a living database of all consumer products
- Enable quick access to product research, news, choices, criticism, reviews and pricing
- Provide easy access to information on product manufacturers
- Encourage informed consumer purchasing
- Create awareness and appreciation for the global web of production systems that are involved in creating and delivering our products to us
We also hope information enthusiasts will be able to find fun facts and history lessons about their favorite products in the pages of this Wiki.
Finding information
You can access the contents by searching or by browsing. If you know the name of the product you are looking for (like: Fruity Pebbles cereal), simply type it in the quick search box on the top right, or use the advanced search link on the left. You can also search by general category (like: cereal), brand name (like: Coca Cola company), key words (like: low fat) or UPC (unique product code on the Barcode).
You can browse by category by going through the product Index link on the side bar. You can also choose to view a random product or top rated products per category or use the Tag cloud to follow popular content.
Every product and product category will have its own page. An outline of the information in that page will be displayed in the contents bar, this serves as a quick link as well as a summary of the structure of the page. The list of references, related pages and external sites will appear at the bottom of each product page. All pages can be viewed and edited by anyone without logging in. Product reviews can be viewed and added by selecting the reviews tab on the top right of the product page. Only the review stars and number of reviewers will be visible on the main product page.
We rely on our users to maintain the accuracy of the information on this site, like in other Wikis we expect the older articles to be edited and reviewed more number of times and hence be more accurate than the newer articles. By providing the ‘article age bar’ on every product page we help readers assess if the information has stood the test of time on our site. None of the information you see will be edited by CommoditEASE, please see our Policy page for more information.
Editing and reuse of information
The information in our site can be viewed and edited by any internet user and does not require membership.
The information in this site can be reused and shared for non-commercial use without permission under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License.
We encourage contributors to verify their contributions by adding references; non-Copyrighted relevant images and videos can be uploaded. We urge editors to follow our editing guidelines and maintain an acceptable unbiased standard.
In order to keep the product page as factual and objective as possible we have a separate review section associated with every product that can be viewed only by following a link out of the product page.
CommoditEASE does not have an editorial board. Revisions are not reviewed by us before they appear on the site and the content is not a result of CommoditEASE editorial decisions. CommoditEASE intervenes only if a posting is causing conflict or if an inappropriate posting is flagged for removal.
Adding a new product:
Contributors who would like to add a new product would need to be registered members of CommoditEASE (top right corner). Membership is free and unrestricted. Contributors can choose their level of anonymity. Every contribution can be reviewed or changed by anyone by simply clicking the edit this button on the top of every page. We have a page wizard in our tools section that can assist you in creating a new page. Before creating a page please check that the page does not already exist by using our advanced search. If the page exists, feel free to make amendments to it.
Legalities and other things about CommoditEASE:
We are a not-for-profit Wiki and will be a privately owned site. In a bid to become an impartial information source, we do not accept corporate advertisements or corporate sponsorships. Our operating costs will be met by user donations. The advertisements you see here are that of wikidot.com to cover the cost of our free site, we do not benefit financially from these advertisements and will upgrade to the professional non-advertising service as soon as we can afford it.
